| hemophilia | <disease, haematology> A haemorrhagic diathesis occurring in two main forms: 1. Haemophilia A (classic haemophilia, factor VIII deficiency), an X linked disorder due to deficiency of coagulation factor VIII. 2. Haemophilia B (factor IX deficiency, Christmas disease), also X linked, due to deficiency of coagulation factor IX. Both forms are determined by a mutant gene near the telomere of the long arm of the X chromosome (Xq), but a different loci and are characterised by subcutaneous and intramuscular haemorrhages, bleeding from the mouth, gums, lips and tongue, haematuria and haemarthroses. | acne neonatorum | A condition in newborn infants, characterised by papules and comedones on forehead and cheeks. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anaemia neonatorum | <haematology> A condition which develops in the foetus due to an incompatibility between the mother's blood type (RH factor) and the baby's. Maternal antibodies, which enter the foetal circulation during delivery attack the baby's red blood cells leading to haemolysis (rupture of the cells). Symptoms include an infant with an enlarged liver and spleen, swelling, jaundice and anaemia. (27 Sep 1997) |
| anoxia neonatorum | Any anoxia observed in newborn infants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| asphyxia neonatorum | Respiratory failure in the newborn. (12 Dec 1998) |
| blennorrhoea neonatorum | Acute conjunctival inflammation in the newborn, usually caused by maternal gonococcal infection. The causative agent is neisseria gonorrhoeae. The baby's eyes are contaminated during passage through the birth canal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mastitis neonatorum | Mastitis in the secreting breast tissue of the newborn, usually staphylococcal. (05 Mar 2000) |
| melena neonatorum | <paediatrics> Melena of the newborn or melana occurring in young infants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myotonia neonatorum | Hypocalcaemic tetany occurring in neonates or young infants, due to transient functional hypoparathyroidism in consumption of cow's milk (high phosphorus content). Synonym: myotonia neonatorum, tetania neonatorum, tetanism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sclerema neonatorum | A severe, sometimes fatal, disorder of adipose tissue occurring chiefly in preterm or debilitated infants suffering from an underlying illness and manifested by a diffuse, nonpitting induration of the affected tissue. The skin becomes cold, yellowish, mottled, and inflexible. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ichthyosis congenita neonatorum | Generalised ichthyosis with parchment-like skin seen in premature babies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| icterus neonatorum | Icterus which can be accentuated by many factors including excessive haemolysis, sepsis, neonatal hepatitis or congenital atresia of the biliary system. Synonym: physiologic icterus, jaundice of the newborn, neonatal jaundice, physiologic jaundice. (05 Mar 2000) |
| impetigo neonatorum | Dermatitis exfoliativa neonatorum, a generalised pyoderma accompanied by exfoliative dermatitis, with constitutional symptoms, affecting young infants, which may result from atopic dermatitis, Leiner's disease or staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Synonym: impetigo neonatorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| oedema neonatorum | A diffuse, firm, and commonly fatal oedema occurring in the newborn, usually beginning in the legs and spreading upward. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ophthalmia neonatorum | Acute conjunctival inflammation in the newborn, usually caused by maternal gonococcal infection. The causative agent is neisseria gonorrhoeae. The baby's eyes are contaminated during passage through the birth canal. (12 Dec 1998) |
