gripe <zoology> A vulture; the griffin. "Like a white hind under the gripe's sharp claws." (Shak) Gripe's egg, an alchemist's vessel.

devil's grip An acute infectious disease usually occurring in epidemic form, characterised by paroxysms of pain, usually in the chest, and associated with strains of Enterovirus coxsackievirus type B.
