| gestational trophoblastic disease | (choriocarcinoma, molar pregnancy) a type of cancer associated with pregnancy in which a grape-like mole develops in the womb instead of a foetus. (16 Dec 1997) |
|---|
| placental site trophoblastic tumour | A tumour usually arising in the uterus of parous women during reproductive years. Histologically, the tumour consists of a predominance of intermediate trophoblastic cells with fibrinoid material and vascular invasion. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| trophoblastic | Relating to the trophoblast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trophoblastic lacuna | One of the spaces in the early syncytiotrophoblastic layer of the chorion before the formation of villi; in human embryos maternal blood enters these spaces by the 10th day; with the differentiation of the chorionic villi they become intervillous spaces, sometimes called intervillous lacunae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trophoblastic neoplasms | Trophoblastic growth, which may be gestational or nongestational in origin. Trophoblastic neoplasia resulting from pregnancy is often described as gestational trophoblastic disease to distinguish it from germ cell tumours which frequently show trophoblastic elements, and from the trophoblastic differentiation which sometimes occurs in a wide variety of epithelial cancers. Gestational trophoblastic growth has several forms, including hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma. (12 Dec 1998) |
| trophoblastic operculum | The mushroom-shaped plug of fibrin that fills the aperture in the endometrium made by the implanting ovum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trophoblastic tumour | <oncology, tumour> A malignant and rapidly growing tumour which arises from foetal tissue. The preceding factor is a hydatidiform mole. Symptoms include continued vaginal bleeding in a women with a recent history of hydatidiform mole, abortion or term pregnancy. (27 Sep 1997) |
| trophoblastic tumour, placental site | A tumour that arises from the trophoblast of the placental bed and is composed mainly of cytotrophoblastic cells. It encompasses lesions of low- and high-grade malignancy. (holland et al., cancer medicine, 3d ed, p1691) (12 Dec 1998) |
| gestational age | <obstetrics> Foetal age of a newborn, calculated from the number of completed weeks since the first day of the mother's last menstrual period to the date of birth. (27 Sep 1997) |
| gestational diabetes | A glucose intolerance which occurs in pregnancy, usually noticed between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. In most cases the blood glucose level returns to normal after delivery. Although the symptoms of this form of diabetes are mild and nonserious for the mother, elevated blood glucose in the mother has been associated with an increased risk of foetal and newborn death. Risk factors for gestational diabetes include maternal age over 25, family history of diabetes, obesity, birth weight over 9 lb in a previous delivery or a history for congenital birth defect or death, in a previous newborn. (27 Sep 1997) |
| gestational oedema | Occurrence of a generalised and excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissues of greater than 1+ pitting after 12 hours' bed rest, or of a weight gain of 5 pounds or more in 1 week due to the influence of pregnancy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gestational proteinuria | The presence of proteinuria during or under the influence of pregnancy in the absence of hypertension, oedema, renal infection, or known intrinsic renovascular disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gestational psychosis | An obsolete term for psychotic reaction with morbid depressive features associated with pregnancy. See: postpartum psychosis, puerperal psychosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gestational sac | <radiology> Arises from blastocyst which implants into secretory endometrium surrounded by echogenic trophoblast sac size: 6th week = 17mm;, 8th week = 31 mm, fills chorionic cavity by 12th week visualization of gestational sac, relative to beta-hCG levels: transabdominal scan: greater than 1800 IU/l, transvaginal scan: less than 500 IU/l = 20%, 500-1000 IU/l = 80%, greater than 1000 IU/l = 100%, relative to menstrual age, transabdominal scan: earliest by 5.5 weeks (10-12mm), transvaginal scan: routinely seen by 5-5.5 weeks see: double decidual sac (12 Dec 1998) |
| small for gestational age | <obstetrics, paediatrics> A weight classification of newborns associated with poor health outcomes, the weight falling below the 10th percentile on the intrauterine growth curve for the infant's calculated gestational age. (27 Sep 1997) |
| diabetes, gestational | A diabetic condition that appears during pregnancy (gestation) and may go away after the birth of the baby. (12 Dec 1998) |
| gestational trophoblastic disease |
A rare cancer in women of childbearing age in which cancer cells grow in the tissues that are formed in the uterus after conception. Also called gestational trophoblastic tumor, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, molar pregnancy, or choriocarcinoma.
