CancerWEB ¿µ¿µ ÀÇÇлçÀü À¯»ç °Ë»ö °á°ú : 15 ÆäÀÌÁö: 1
dosage effect The alteration of a phenotype by an increased dosage, or amount, of the product of the gene.
(09 Oct 1997)
gene dosage <molecular biology> Number of copies of a particular gene locus in the genome, in most cases either one or two.
(18 Nov 1997)
gene dosage compensation The putative mechanism that adjusts the X-linked phenotypes of males and females to compensate for the haploid state in males and the diploid state in females. It is now largely ascribed to lyonization which compensates the mean of the dose but not its variance, which is greater in females.
(05 Mar 2000)
maternal effect gene Gene, usually required for early embryonic development, whose product is secreted into the egg by the mother. The phenotype is thus determined by the mother's, rather than the egg's, genotype.
Compare:. Zygotic effect gene.
See: egg polarity gene.
(18 Nov 1997)
zygotic effect gene <genetics> A gene whose phenotype is dependent on the genotype of the zygote, rather than the genotype of the mother.
See: maternal effect gene.
(18 Nov 1997)
radiotherapy dosage The total amount of radiation absorbed by tissues as a result of radiotherapy.
(12 Dec 1998)
dosage The determination and regulation of the size, frequency and number of doses.
(18 Nov 1997)
dosage compensation <genetics> A genetic regulatory mechanism which operates to equalise the phenotypic expression of characteristics determined by genes on the x chromosome so that they are equally expressed in the xy male and the xx female.
(12 Dec 1998)
dosage forms Completed forms of the pharmaceutical preparation in which prescribed doses of medication are included. They are designed to resist action by gastric fluids, prevent vomiting and nausea, reduce or alleviate the undesirable taste and smells associated with oral administration, achieve a high concentration of drug at target site, or produce a delayed or long-acting drug effect. They include capsules, liniments, ointments, pharmaceutical solutions, powders, tablets, etc.
(12 Dec 1998)
dosage schedule A scheme set up to determine and regulate size, frequency and number of doses.
(18 Nov 1997)
abscopal effect A reaction produced following irradiation but occurring outside the zone of actual radiation absorption.
(05 Mar 2000)
additive effect <biochemistry, chemistry> An additive effect is the overall biological effect two chemicals acting together and which is the simple sum of the effects of the chemicals acting independently.
Compare: antagonism.
(15 Jan 1998)
adverse effect This is an abnormal or harmful effect to an organism caused by exposure to a chemical. It is indicated by some result such as death, a change in food or water consumption, altered body and organ weights, altered enzyme levels, or visible illness. An effect may be classed as adverse if it causes functional or anatomical damage, causes irreversible change in the homeostasis of the organism, or increases the susceptibility of the organism to other chemical or biological stress. A non-adverse effect will usually be reversed when the organism is no longer being exposed to the chemical.
(09 Oct 1997)
Anrep effect A small transient positive inotropic effect of abrupt increases of systolic aortic and left ventricular pressures related to recovery from transient subendocardial ischemia (e.g., cold pressor test).
(05 Mar 2000)
antagonistic effect This is the consequence of one chemical (or group of chemicals) counteracting the effects of another chemical, the opposing chemicals cancel out each other's effects.
