a genus of woody vines of the family Loganaceae, native to Asia and the southeastern United States. G. sempervi´rens (L.) Alt. is the yellow jessamine, a flowering plant of North America that contains gelsemine and other toxic alkaloids. It causes weakness, incoordination, convulsions, and sometimes respiratory arrest in humans, cattle, and poultry.
