영문 gauze 한글 거즈
설명   
  가볍고 부드러운 무명베. 섬유로 짠 많은 구멍을 가진 흡수를 위한 직물로 외과수술에 쓰기 전에 보통 멸균시키고, 여러 소독제를 침투시킨다. 거즈라는 이름은 팔레스타인(이스라엘)의 가자(Gaza) 지방에서 생산되었기 때문이라는 설과, 아랍어의 gazz(생사)에서 유래한다는 설이 있다. 무르게 꼰 무명실로 성기게 짜서 표백한 뒤에 풀을 먹이지 않고 제품을 내놓기 때문에, 부드럽고 수분을 잘 흡수한다.

sponge 1. <zoology> Any one of numerous species of Spongiae, or Porifera.
2. The elastic fibrous skeleton of many species of horny Spongiae (keratosa), used for many purposes, especially the varieties of the genus Spongia. The most valuable sponges are found in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and on the coasts of Florida and the West Indies.

<chemistry> A metallic lead brought to a spongy form by reduction of lead salts, or by compressing finely divided lead; used in secondary batteries and otherwise.
<botany> Sponge tree See Loof. Velvet sponge, a fine, soft commercial sponge (Spongia equina, variety meandriniformis) found in Florida and the West Indies. Vitreous sponge. See Glass-sponge.
