fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). A technique in which a fluorescently labelled DNA probe is used to hybridize with and therefore detect a particular chromosome or gene with the help of fluorescence microscopy.

fluorescence in situ hybridization A test to detect ErbB2 gene amplification in the tumors of patients who intend to receive trastuzumab therapy for breast cancer, in situ hydridization is a sensitive method that is generally used to detect specific gene sequences in tissues sections or cell preparations by hybridizing the complimentary strand of a nucleotide probe to the sequence of interest. FISH uses a fluorescence probe to increase the sensitivity of in situ hybridization.
