filar micrometre <microscopy> An eyepiece equipped with a fiducial line in its focal plane that is movable by means of a calibrated micrometre screw in order to make accurate measurements of length.
Synonym: filar eyepiece.

filar micrometre ocular <microscopy> A micrometre ocular with crossed lines which can be simultaneously focused in and moved across the field by means of a micrometre screw.
The amount of displacement can be read in 0.01 steps on the micrometre drum head. This makes a very delicate measuring device, since calibration of the micrometre scale by means of a stage micrometre gives values for each interval on the drum head which are much less than the resolving power of the highest-aperture objectives.

micrometre One-millionth of a metre, or ten to the minus sixth metre (abbreviated um), the unit used for measuring microorganisms.

micrometre disk <microscopy> A glass disk engraved with a suitable scale, used at the diaphragm of a micrometre ocular. The scale to be focused by the eye lens has to be seen in the field of view. Micrometre eye piece.

stage micrometre <microscopy> A graduated scale used as a standard on the stage of a light microscope for calibrating an eyepiece micrometre, also for determining the magnification of a set-up in photomicrography, etc.
