extracellular matrix The material outside cells which provides support and structure to tissue. Consists of ground substance and fibers. The ground substance is an amorphous gel-like material that fills the space between the cells and contains interstitial fluid and proteoglycans. The fibers consist of collagen, elastin, and reticular fibers, the amounts and proportions of which vary depending on the type of tissue being scrutinised.
