a group of arbovirus species of the genus Alphavirus, each named for the type of encephalomyelitis it causes in horses, other equines, and humans; they have a reservoir of infection in birds and transmission by mosquitoes. Included are eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus, western equine encephalomyelitis virus, and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.
