any of a family of opioid peptides found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems; most are agonists at opioid receptor sites. Some are probably involved in pain regulation at the levels of the spinal cord and medulla and others may aid hypothalamic regulation of eating and drinking. See also endorphin and enkephalin.
