venereal trypanosomiasis affecting horses and asses in Africa, Asia, and certain regions of North and South America, caused by Trypanosoma equiperdum; characteristics include edematous swelling of the external genitalia, a mucopurulent discharge from the urethra or vagina, cutaneous plaques, and progressive emaciation and weakness. Called also covering disease and equine or horse syphilis.
