a degenerative disease of the brain associated with long-term use of hemodialysis, marked by speech disorders and constant myoclonic jerks, progressing to global dementia, with associated psychological changes; it is often accompanied by osteomalacia and is due to high levels of aluminum in the water used in the dialysis fluid or to aluminum-containing compounds given to control phosphorus levels. Called also progressive dialysis e. and dialysis dementia.
