| metabolic detoxication, drug | Reduction of pharmacologic activity or toxicity of a drug or other foreign substance by a living system, usually by enzymatic action. It includes those metabolic transformations that make the substance more soluble for faster renal excretion. (12 Dec 1998) |
| sorption detoxification | Elimination of toxic or biologically active substances from body fluids by interaction with a sorbent medium. The types of media include absorbents, adsorbents, ion-exchange materials, and complexing agents. Detoxification can be extracorporeal (haemodialysis, haemofiltration, haemoperfusion, plasmapheresis), or occur inside the body (enterosorption, peritoneal dialysis). (12 Dec 1998) |
| detoxication | 1. Recovery from the toxic effects of a drug. 2. Removal of the toxic properties from a poison. 3. Metabolic conversion of pharmacologically active principles to pharmacologically less active principles. Synonym: detoxification. (05 Mar 2000) |
| detoxification | Treatment designed to free an addict from his drug habit. (18 Nov 1997) |
