||

| tumor | 1. <oncology> An abnormal mass of tissue that results from excessive cell division that is uncontrolled and progressive, also called a neoplasm. Tumours perform no useful body function. They may be either benign (not cancerous) or malignant. 2. Swelling, one of the cardinal signs of inflammations, morbid enlargement. Origin: L. Tumere = to swell (12 May 1997) |

| tumor marker | <investigation, oncology> A substance in the body that usually indicates the presence of cancer. These markers are usually specific to certain types of cancer and are usually found in the blood or other tissue samples. Examples are alphafetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). They may be indicators of tumour stage and grade as well as useful for monitoring responses to treatment and predicting recurrence. Many chemical groups are represented including hormones, antigens, amino and nucleic acids, enzymes, polyamines, and specific cell membrane proteins and lipids. (18 Jul 2002) |
| tumor necrosis factor | <cytokine> Originally described as a tumour inhibiting factor in the blood of animals exposed to bacterial lipopolysaccharide or Bacille Calmette-Guerin. Preferentially kills tumour cells in vivo and in vitro, causes necrosis of certain transplanted tumours in mice and inhibits experimental metastases. Human Tumour Necrosis factor alpha is a protein of 157 amino acids and has a wide range of pro inflammatory actions. Usually considered a cytokine. Synonym: cachectin. Acronym: TNF (13 Nov 1997) |
| desmoplastic | 1. Causing or forming adhesions. 2. Causing fibrosis in the vascular stroma of a neoplasm. (05 Mar 2000) |
| desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma | <tumour> A rare variant of astrocytoma most frequently occurring in infancy, the tumour has a spindled cell appearance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| desmoplastic fibroma | <tumour> A benign fibrous tumour of bone affecting children and young adults; cortical destruction may result. (05 Mar 2000) |
| desmoplastic malignant melanoma | <tumour> A melanoma with marked fibrosis surrounding atypical spindle-shaped melanocytes in the dermis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| desmoplastic trichoepithelioma | <tumour> A solitary, hard, annular, centrally depressed papule, occurring usually in women on the face, consisting of dermal strands of basaloid cells and small keratinous cysts within sclerotic desmoplastic stroma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| desmoplastic tumours | <radiology> Carcinoid of small bowel or colon, Hodgkin's lymphoma, scirrhous gastric carcinoma (12 Dec 1998) |
| fibroma, desmoplastic | A extremely rare bone tumour characterised by abundant collagen formation and a fibrous stroma, without evidence of mitosis or pleomorphism. It appears on X-rays as an osteolytic lesion with well-defined margins and must be differentiated from primary fibrosarcoma of bone. (devita jr et al., cancer: principles & practice of oncology, 3d ed, p1441) (12 Dec 1998) |
| carcinoma, non-small-cell lung | A heterogeneous aggregate of at least three distinct histological types of lung cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. They are dealt with collectively because of the shared properties of poor response to conventional chemotherapy and the potential for cure with surgical resection in a fraction of patients. (12 Dec 1998) |
| carcinoma, small cell | An anaplastic, highly malignant, and usually bronchogenic carcinoma composed of small ovoid cells with scanty neoplasm. It is characterised by a dominant, deeply basophilic nucleus, and absent or indistinct nucleoli. There are admixtures of small cell lung carcinoma with other types of lung cancer. Small cell carcinomas are distinguished by their distinctive biological features, response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and by their nearly universal tendency to develop overt or subclinical metastases, which frequently eliminates surgery in most patients. (12 Dec 1998) |
| sarcoma, small cell | A sarcoma characterised by the presence of small cells, cells measuring 9-14 micrometers with a faint or indistinct rim of cytoplasm and an oval-to-elongated nucleus with relatively dense chromatin. (12 Dec 1998) |
| small cell carcinoma | <oncology, tumour> Common malignant neoplasm of bronchus. Cells of the tumour have endocrine like characteristics and may secrete one or more of a wide range of hormones, especially regulatory peptides like bombesin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| small cell lung cancer | A type of lung cancer in which the cells are small and round. Also called oat cell lung cancer. (12 Dec 1998) |
