a nonspecific term for an enzyme that catalyzes the cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond in a substrate with formation of two products by a process other than hydrolysis, i.e., an oxidoreductase, a lyase, or a transferase. Used especially for enzymes involved in synthesis of steroid hormones.
