In prokaryotes, the mechanism involves inactivation of a repressor, either by inhibition of a corepressor or by the action of an inducer. In eukaryotes, the process appears to involve combinations of regulatory proteins and specific effectors, but has not been elucidated. The net result is frequently elevation of the level of a specific enzyme.
