| 설명 | 우울한 감정과 허무감, 절망감, 정신적 행위와 운동능력의 지연 및 그외 많은 신체적 증상을 나타내는 병. 오래 전부터 기술되어 왔으며 중세 이후 계속적으로 병으로 인식되어 왔다. 대개 남자의 2~3%, 여자의 5~9%에서 우울증이 생기며, 평생동안 남자의 10%, 여자의 23% 정도에서 이병이 생긴다고 한다. 전체적으로 남자보다 여자에게 약 2배 많으며, 연령적으로는 20~30대에 비교적 흔한 것으로 되어 있다. 증상은 식욕상실이나 체중감소 또는 식욕증가나 체중증가, 흥미나 쾌락의 상실, 불면 또는 수면과잉, 정신운동의 지연 또는 지체, 에너지의 감퇴나 피로감, 무가치감. 자책감 또는 부적절한 죄책감, 자살충동. 죽었으면 하는 소원 또는 자살기도, 사고력, 주의집중 능력의 감퇴 등이다. 진단은 여러 가지 기준에 의해서 가능하나 미국정신과학회에서 만든 진단기준인 DSM-3에 의하면 최소한 2주동안 거의 매일 위에서 기술한 우울증의 대표적 증상 중 최소한 4가지 증상이 나타나야만 우울병으로 진단할 수 있다고 한다. |

| depression | 1. A lowering or decrease of functional activity. 2. <psychiatry> A mental state of depressed mood characterised by feelings of sadness, despair and discouragement. Depression ranges from normal feelings of the blues through dysthymia to major depression. It in many ways resembles the grief and mourning that follow bereavement, there are often feelings of low self esteem, guilt and self reproach, withdrawal from interpersonal contact and somatic symptoms such as eating and sleep disturbances. | depression, bipolar | Formerly called manic- depressive illness. Not nearly as prevalent as other forms of depressive disorders, bipolar disorder involves cycles of depression and elation or mania. Sometimes the mood switches are dramatic and rapid, but most often they are gradual. When in the depressed cycle, you can have any or all of the symptoms of a depressive disorder. When in the manic cycle, any or all symptoms listed under mania may be experienced. Mania often affects thinking, judgment, and social behaviour in ways that cause serious problems and embarrassment. For example, unwise business or financial decisions may be made when an individual is in a manic phase. Bipolar disorder is often a chronic recurring condition. (12 Dec 1998) |
