| degradation | <biochemistry, chemistry> The reduction of a chemical compound to one less complex, as by splitting off one or more groups. (18 Nov 1997) |

| edman degradation | A lab technique used to find out the order of amino acids in a polypeptide (chain of amino acids). It involves using the Edman reagent, phenyl isothiocyanate (PITC), to react one by one with each amino acid, in order. The technique is used in machines which automatically sequence (determine the order of subunits) polypeptides. (09 Oct 1997) |
| fibrin degradation products | <haematology, investigation> A test that measures fibrin degradation products which result from the dissolution of a blood clot. Normal value is less than 10 mcg/ml (micrograms per millilitre). They may be increased in conditions such as burns, placental abruption, heart disease, DIC, after massive blood transfusion, hypoxia, intrauterine foetal death, portacaval shunt, leukaemia, transfusion reaction, transplant rejection, sepsis, renal failure and preeclampsia. Acronym: FDP (23 Sep 2002) |
| fibrin fibrinogen degradation products | <chemical> Soluble protein fragments formed by the proteolytic action of plasmin on fibrin or fibrinogen. Fdp and their complexes profoundly impair the haemostatic process and are a major cause of haemorrhage in intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis. Pharmacological action: antithrombins. (12 Dec 1998) |
| malum coxae senile | <orthopaedics> Deformity of the head of the femur caused by ischemic damage. Synonym: senile hip disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| primary senile dementia | <disease> A progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterised by loss of function and death of nerve cells in several areas of the brain leading to loss of cognitive function such as memory and language. The cause of nerve cell death is unknown but the cells are recognised by the appearance of unusual helical protein filaments in the nerve cells (neurofibrillary tangles) and by degeneration in cortical regions of brain, especially frontal and temporal lobes. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. (22 May 1997) |
| senile | Of or pertaining to old age; proceeding from, or characteristic of, old age; affected with the infirmities of old age; as, senile weakness. "Senile maturity of judgment. <medicine> " Senile gangrene, a form of gangrene occuring particularly in old people, and caused usually by insufficient blood supply due to degeneration of the walls of the smaller arteries. Origin: L. Senilis, from senex, gen. Senis, old, an old man: cf. F. Senile. See Senior. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| senile arteriosclerosis | Arteriosclerosis similar to hypertensive arteriosclerosis, but as a result of advanced age rather than hypertension. (05 Mar 2000) |
| senile atrophoderma | Atrophoderma senilis, the loss of collagen, with thinning and decreased elasticity of the skin associated with old age. (05 Mar 2000) |
| senile atrophy | Wasting of tissues and organs with advancing age from decreased catabolic or anabolic processes, at times due to endocrine changes, decreased use, or ischemia. Synonym: geromarasmus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| senile cataract | A cataract occurring spontaneously in the elderly; mainly a cuneiform cataract, nuclear cataract, or posterior subcapsular cataract, alone or in combination. (05 Mar 2000) |
| senile chorea | A disorder resembling Sydenham's chorea, not associated with cardiac disease or dementia, occurring in the aged. (05 Mar 2000) |
