d-xylose absorption t. (for differential diagnosis in malabsorption syndromes): after the oral administration to a fasting adult of 25 g (or sometimes 5 g) of D-xylose dissolved in 250 mL of water, followed immediately by an additional 250 mL of water, the amount excreted in the urine during a 5-hour period is determined. Since poor renal function may also result in low xylose absorption, blood levels are also determined at two hours. Normally, more than 4.0 g of xylose should be excreted over the 5-hour period; less than this amount suggests intestinal malabsorption. Blood values are normally more than 25 mg xylose per 100 mL of blood.
