critical flicker frequency The illusion of motion is based on the phi phenomenon (also called persistence of vision) - the fact that excitation of the sensory neurons "persist" for a short time after the stimulus has gone. The number of still frames per second necessary to create this illusion of motion is called the critical flicker frequency (CFF).
