copperhead a venomous snake of two varieties. The lowland copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) prefers to live in swampy or marshy areas, overwintering in animal burrows close to water. Lowland copperheads occur in the far south-eastern corner of South Australia and over much of southern Victoria. The alpine copperhead (Austrelaps ramsayi) is widespread at alpine and subalpine elevations over much of eastern Victoria. Although timid, they are potentially dangerous to humans.
