| hepatitis non-A, non-B | <virology> A virus somewhat similar in size to Hepatitis A but has no antigenic cross reaction with either A or B. Many of the cases are in fact hepatitis C and this was the old term for hepatitis C. (20 Sep 2002) |
| non-A, non-B hepatitis | Hepatitis caused by two or more infectious agents not detectable by methods that reveal the presence of hepatitis viruses A and B; one cause, now called type C hepatitis has been identified; may follow blood transfusion and is often seen in chronic renal dialysis patients. Synonym: NANB hepatitis. (05 Mar 2000) |

| sine | <mathematics> The length of a perpendicular drawn from one extremity of an arc of a circle to the diameter drawn through the other extremity. The perpendicular itself. See Sine of angle, below. Artificial sines, logarithms of the natural sines, or logarithmic sines. Curve of sines. See Sinusoid. Natural sines, the decimals expressing the values of the sines, the radius being unity. Sine of an angle, in a circle whose radius is unity, the sine of the arc that measures the angle; in a right-angled triangle, the side opposite the given angle divided by the hypotenuse. See Trigonometrical function, under Function. Versed sine, that part of the diameter between the sine and the arc. Origin: LL. Sinus a sine, L. Sinus bosom, used in translating the Ar. Jaib, properly, bosom, but probably read by mistake (the consonants being the same) for an original jiba sine, from Skr. Jiva bowstring, chord of an arc, sine. | sine condition | <microscopy> The design of a lens must fulfill this condition, described by Abbe, if the image is to be aplanatic. It states that the ratio of the sines of the angles of the incident and refracted rays to the axis must be constant, this constant is equal to the inverse of the magnification of the image. | abortifacient agents, non-steroidal | Non-steroidal chemical compounds with abortifacient activity. (12 Dec 1998) |
| acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia | <haematology> A form of leukaemia which is characterised by the proliferation of immature bone marrow precursor cells in the marrow and immature white blood cells (granulocytes) in the bloodstream. Occurs primarily in adults and in infants under 1 year of age. Complications include abnormal bleeding and susceptibility to infections. Symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, fevers, weakness, pallor, bone pains, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, easy bruising, enlarged lymph nodes and joint pains. Trisomy-8 is the most common cytogenetic abnormality observed, followed by monosomy-7 and monosomy-5. Approximately 8% of cases show trisomy-8, mostly in AML (M1), AM (M4) and acute monocytic leukaemia (M5). Many pre-leukaemic conditions, acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia and secondary leukemia show monosomy-7 or deletion of the long arm of chromosome 7. Treatment includes chemotherapy and/or bone marrow transplant. Acronym: ANLL Incidence: 2.5 cases per 100,000 (all ages). Origin: Gr. Haima = blood (07 Apr 1998) |
