| cAMP | <molecular biology> 3'5' cyclic ester of AMP. The first second messenger hormone signalling system to be characterised. Generated from ATP by the action of adenyl cyclase that is coupled to hormone receptors by G-proteins (GTP-binding proteins). CAMP activates a specific (cAMP dependent) protein kinase and is inactivated by phosphodiesterase action giving 5'AMP. Also functions as an extracellular morphogen for some slime moulds. | CAMP factor | A test to identify Group B beta-streptococci based on their formation of a substance (CAMP factor) that enlarges the area of haemolysis formed by streptococcal beta-haemolysin. Origin: Christie, Atkins, and Munch-Petersen, developers of the t. (05 Mar 2000) |
| camp fever | <disease, microbiology> An acute infectious disease characterised by high fever, a skin eruption and severe headache. In the past, typhus has been a disease of war, famine or catastrophe, being spread by lice, ticks or fleas. The infecting organism is Rickettsia prowazekii, sensitive to sulpha drugs or tetracycline. | camp hospital | A hospital unit located in a military or recreational encampment; usually of small size and limited facilities, for immediate care of illnesses and injuries. Synonym: camp hospital. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cAMP phosphodiesterase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic phosphate forming 5'-AMP. A crucial step in the regulation of cellular adenosine 3',5'-cyclic phosphate levels. Inhibited by caffeine. Synonym: cAMP phosphodiesterase. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cAMP receptor protein | catabolite (gene) activator protein |

| M concentration | The maximum number of bacterial cells which can be produced in a unit volume of growth medium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration | Hgb/Hct;the average haemoglobin concentration in a given volume of packed red cells, calculated from the haemoglobin therein and the haematocrit, in erythrocyte indices. (05 Mar 2000) |
| peak plasma drug concentration | <pharmacology> The highest level of drug that can be obtained in the blood usually following multiple doses. (09 Oct 1997) |
| minimal alveolar concentration | The end-alveolar concentration of an inhalation anaesthetic which prevents somatic response to a painful stimulus in 50% of individuals; an index of relative potency of inhalation anaesthetics. Synonym: minimal anaesthetic concentration. (05 Mar 2000) |
