any of a group of diseases that, although clinically distinct and not necessarily related etiologically, have in common widespread pathologic changes in the connective tissue; they include lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, polyarteritis nodosa, rheumatic fever, and rheumatoid arthritis. Collagen disease is not to be confused with collagen disorder (q.v.).
