gram-negative bacilli found in the intestinal tract that resemble Escherichia coli, particularly in the fermentation of lactose with gas. The term generally is used to refer to the genera Citrobacter, Escherichia, Edwardsiella, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Serratia.
