an order of free-swimming, flagellate, chiefly ameboid, plastic, plantlike, marine and freshwater protozoa (class Phytomastigophorea, subphylum Mastigophora) having two unequal flagella, golden-brown chloroplasts when present, and a cyst wall that is typically siliceous. Synura is a representative genus.
