| 설명 | 폐의 염증으로 폐포 내에 공기 대신 염증 세포나 삼출액으로 가득 차 호흡곤란을 야기하며, 발열 등의 전신 증상을 동반한다. 위치, 원인균 등에 따라 구분한다. 예를 들어, 대엽성 폐렴(lobar pneumonia)란 폐렴 구균에 의한 급성 페렴으로 한 개 또는 여러 개의 폐엽을 따라 생기는 광범위한 삼출성 경화가 특징인 병을 지칭한다. 이것은 폐렴의 발생부위에 따라 부르는 말이다. 그리고 바이러스폐렴(viral pneumonia)란 바이러스에 의해 발생하는 모든 폐렴을 말하는데, 이것은 원인균에 따라 지칭한 말이다. |

| 설명 | 음식물의 찌꺼기같은 이물이 기도에 들어가 이차적으로 생기는 폐렴. 음식물이나 입안의 미생물이 식도로 넘어가지 않고 기도로 잘못 흡인되어 야기되는 폐렴을 말한다. 흡인 물질의 특성에 따라서 세 가지 증후군을 포함한다. ① 화학적 폐렴은 직접적으로 폐에 유해한 물질을 흡인했을 때 일어나며, 급성 호흡곤란, 빠른 호흡, 빠른맥이 나타나고 동반되는 증상은 주로 청색증, 기관지 경련, 열 등이다. ② 하기도의 세균성 감염이 흡인성 폐렴의 가장 흔한 형태로, 기침, 발열, 고름가래 증상을 나타낸다. ③ 하기도의 기계적 폐쇄는 특별한 물질, 특히 땅콩, 작은 고기덩어리에 의해 흡인되었을 때 일어나며, 흡인 물질과 기도의 직경에 따라 증상은 다르다. 기관에서 막히면 종종 호흡곤란과 함께 사망에 이르기도 하며, 하기도 아래 부분에서 흡인이 일어나면 만성 기침이 발생한다. |

| 설명 | 백혈병(leukemia)란 비정상적인 백혈구 세포의 증식에 의해 일어나는 병적인 상태를 말하는데, 흔히 말초혈액에 미분화세포가 나타나며, 정상적인 적혈구세포와 백혈구세포, 혈소판의 급격한 감소를 가져와 정상적인 세포에 의해 행해지는 여러 기능의 감소를 주증상으로 하여 병원에 찾아오게 된다. 따라서 적혈구세포의 감소로 인한 빈혈, 백혈구세포의 감소로 인한 많은 감염증세(흔히 걸리지 않는 세균에 의한 감염, 지나치게 잦은 감기, 폐렴 등), 혈소판세포의 감소로 인한 출혈증상이 나타난다. 또한 피를 생산하는 골수 조직에서는 이런 비정상적인 세포의 증식만을 볼 수 있으며, 정상적인 세포의 증식은 보기 힘들다. 만성림프성 백혈병은 서양에서는 비교적 백혈병 중에서 흔한 형이지만 동양권에서는 아주 드문 백혈병의 형태이다. 대개 60세 이상의 고령층에서 많이 생기고 30세 이하에서는 거의 찾아볼 수가 없다. 혈액검사상에서 림프구의 많은 증가를 볼 수가 있고, 대신에 다른 혈액세포들은 감소를 나타낸다. 백혈병 중 예후가 좋은 편이며 대개 치료는 항암제를 이용한 화학요법을 많이 사용하며, 평균 생존기간은 4~5년이다. |

| 설명 | 만성적으로 기도의 폐쇄를 가져오는 병을 이르는 말. 대개 만성기관지염, 기관지 천식, 폐기종의 3가지 병을 말한다. 만성기관지염이란 기관지의 만성염증을 말한다. 기관지의 염증으로 인해서 기관지의 점막에 부종이 생기고 이로 인해서 기관지의 내경이 좁아져서 기도의 폐쇄를 가져온다. 대개 흡연과 밀접한 연관을 가지며, 호흡곤란, 기침, 그리고 가래(대개 색이 푸르고 점도가 높은 가래)가 증상으로 나타난다. 폐기종은 기관지의 벽을 지지하는 조직의 파괴에 의해서 기관지가 제 모양을 갖추지 못하고 무너지게 되어 기도의 폐쇄가 일어나는 병이다. 즉 기관지가 관 모양으로 팽팽하게 펴지는 것을 지지하는 조직의 파괴에 의해서 관모양으로 펴지지 못해 결국은 폐포내에 공기가 차고 폐포벽이 파열되고 기관지가 좁아지게 되는 병을 말한다. 기관지천식이란 여러 가지 자극에 대해서 기관지가 과민한 반응을 보여서 생기는 기관지의 가역적인 폐쇄를 의미한다. 즉 정상인에게서는 기관지의 폐쇄를 보이지 않는 자극에 대해서 기관지의 폐쇄가 생기고 그 자극이 없을 경우에는 기관지의 폐쇄가 없어지는 병을 말한다. |

| 설명 | B형 간염이나 비A형-비B형 간염의 속발증으로 나타나는 간의 만성염증이다. 같은 형태의 병이 선천성 또는 후천감마글로불린결핍증이나 어떤 종류의 약물 투여에 수반해서 나타날 수도 있다. 특징적으로 문맥부에 형질세포와 큰포식세포의 침윤, 조각괴사(간소엽 주변부 간세포의 파괴) 및 섬유증 등의 조직소견을 나타낸다. 병의 경과는 매우 다양하며 장기간의 무증상기를 보일 수도 있고 그 사이 사이에 황달, 전신쇠약, 식욕부진 및 발열 등의 증상이 나타나는 수가 있으며, 또 무월경증, 관절염, 피부발진, 혈관염, 갑상샘염, 콩팥사구체염, 궤양성대장염, 쉐그렌증후군 등 간 이외의 증상이 나타나는 수도 있고, 간경화증과 간기능상실로 진행되는 수도 있다. 자가면역메커니즘이 관여되는 것으로 추측되고 있다. |

| eosinophilic pneumonia | A self-limiting inflammation in the lungs where there is associated infiltration of eosinophils into lung tissue. Chest X-ray reveals pulmonary infiltrates and full blood count (CBC) shows increased numbers of eosinophils. The cause is unknown and the disease often resolves without treatment. Symptoms include tenderness and swelling of arms and legs, joint contractures, bone apins, muscle aches and muscle weakness. Some may complain of carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms with numbness and tingling in the hands. Diagnosis is made by tissue biopsy. Treatment includes systemic corticosteroids. | eosinophilic granuloma | <oncology, tumour> An immunologic disorder of unknown cause where there is proliferation of histiocytes (a type of cell in the immune system) in the bloodstream. The disorder is characterised by inflammation of the bronchioles and small pulmonary vessels that leads to fibrosis and destruction of alveolar cell walls. Cigarette smoking is considered a risk factor. Individuals with this disorder are also at increased risk for spontaneous pneumothorax. Symptoms include cough, chest pains, shortness of breath, fever, weight loss and malaise. Bronchoscopy with biopsy confirms the diagnosis. Childhood forms exist and cause more systemic symptoms and findings such as failure to thrive, weight loss, fevers, irritability, rash and bone pains. Treatment is with corticosteroids. | eosinophilic leukocyte | A polymorphonuclear leukocyte characterised by many large or prominent, refractile, cytoplasmic granules that are fairly uniform in size and bright yellow-red or orange when treated with Wright's or similar stains; the nuclei are usually larger than those of neutrophils, do not stain as deeply, and characteristically have two lobes (a third lobe is sometimes interposed on the connecting strand of chromatin); these leukocyte's are motile phagocytes with distinctive antiparasitic functions.
