an endemic, zoonotic form of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis, found mainly in forest workers in the Yucatan and adjacent areas of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. It is caused by Leishmania mexicana mexicana, transmitted by Lutzomyia olmeca, and characterized by one or a few lesions that are usually self-limited and heal within 6 months, except when the pinna of the ear is involved, in which case over a period of many years the chronic lesion invades and slowly destroys the cartilage of the ear.
