| muscle relaxant | <pharmacology> An agent that specifically AIDS in reducing muscle tension, as those acting at the polysynaptic neurons of motor nerves (for example meprobamate) or at the myoneural junction (curare and related compounds). Origin: L. Relaxare = to loosen (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| smooth muscle relaxant | An agent, such as an antispasmodic, bronchodilator, or vasodilator, that reduces the tension or tone of smooth (involuntary) muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acting out | Expressing unconscious emotional conflicts or feelings, often of hostility or love, through overt behaviour. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cis acting | <molecular biology> Having to do with a genetic element (such as a promoter or other regulatory locus) having an effect (like promotion or suppression) on two unrelated targets (such as genes) on the same chromosome as a result of their relative positions on the chromosome. A gene which regulates the transcription into mRNA of other genes nearby on the same chromosome by binding protein transcription factors which are necessary to turn transcription on or off. (09 Oct 1997) |
| cis-acting locus | A section of DNA that affects the activity of DNA sequences on that same molecule of DNA. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cis-acting protein | A protein that acts on the molecule of DNA from which it was expressed. (05 Mar 2000) |
| self-acting | Acting of or by one's self or by itself; said especially of a machine or mechanism which is made to perform of or for itself what is usually done by human agency; automatic; as, a self-acting feed apparatus; a self-acting mule; a self-acting press. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| long-acting thyroid stimulator | <endocrinology, immunology> A thyroid stimulating antibody which is directed against a receptor for TSH on the thyroid gland. This antibody acts like TSH and stimulates the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. The presence of this antibody generally indicates Grave's disease (hyperthyroidism). Acronym: LATS (15 Nov 1997) |
| relaxant | 1. Lessening or reducing tension. 2. <pharmacology> An agent that lessens tension. Origin: L. Relaxare = to loosen (18 Nov 1997) |
| relaxant reversal | Use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to terminate the action of nondepolarising neuromuscular relaxants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neuromuscular relaxant | An agent, e.g., curare or succinylcholine, that produces relaxation of striated muscle by interruption of transmission of nervous impulses at the myoneural junction. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nondepolarising relaxant | An agent, e.g., tubocurarine, that paralyzes skeletal muscle without depolarisation of the motor endplate, as in phase II block. (05 Mar 2000) |
| depolarising relaxant | <pharmacology, physiology> An agent, e.g., succinylcholine, that induces depolarisation of the motor endplate and so paralyzes skeletal muscle by a phase I block. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abdominal external oblique muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, fifth to twelfth ribs; insertion, anterior half of lateral lip of iliac crest, inguinal ligament, and anterior layer of the rectus sheath; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, draws thorax downward; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves. Synonym: musculus obliquus externus abdominis, abdominal external oblique muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abdominal internal oblique muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, iliac fascia deep to lateral part of inguinal ligament, anterior half of crest of ilium, and lumbar fascia; insertion, tenth to twelfth ribs and sheath of rectus; some of the fibres from inguinal ligament terminate in the conjoint tendon; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, flexes lumbar vertebral column (bends thorax forward); nerve supply, lower thoracic. Synonym: musculus obliquus internus abdominis, abdominal internal oblique muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
