| BRCA1 | <molecular biology> BRCA1 is a tumour-supressing gene, if even one copy of it is damaged, cancer can develop. Certain mutations confer a high probability (85% lifetime risk) of developing breast cancer, and other types cause ovarian cancer. | BRCA1 protein | Phosphoprotein encoded by the BRCA1 gene (genes, BRCA1). It has limited sequence similarity with known proteins. In normal cells the BRCA1 protein is localised in the nucleus, whereas in the majority of breast cancer cell lines and in malignant pleural effusions from breast cancer patients, it is localised mainly in the cytoplasm.
