boutonneuse f. an acute febrile disease caused by Rickettsia conorii, transmitted by the bites of various ixodid ticks, with dogs and rodents being the chief hosts; characterized by a primary lesion (tache noire) at the site of the tick bite, maculopapular or petechial rash, headache, arthralgia, myalgia, chills, fever, and photophobia, usually without sequelae. It occurs around the Mediterranean, Black, and Caspian Seas, with variant forms in Africa and on the Indian subcontinent. Called also boutonneuse and Conor and Bruch's disease. There are other names based on geographical area, such as South African tickbite f. and Indian tick typhus.
