An early-stage embryo (day 5 or 6) comprising 30-150 cells. The blastocyst consists of a sphere made up of an outer layer of cells (the trophectoderm), a fluid-filled cavity (the blastocoel), and a cluster of cells in the interior (the inner cell mass, from which stem cells may be derived). The size of a blastocyst is approximately 0.15mm.

In blastocyst transfer, infertile women are implanted with embryos that have matured for five days (to the blastocyst stage). By using these more developed embryos, we are able to identify those that are most likely to result in a successful pregnancy. Initial studies published by Dr. David Gardner of the Colorado Center showed that a blastocyst transfer increased the implantation rate per embryo from 21% to 46%.
