| 설명 | 모체의 자궁 내에 있는 태아의 세로축의 위치 관계를 이르는 말로, 위(vertex presentation: 머리의 마루점가 자궁출구 쪽을 향하고 엉덩이가 위쪽에 위치하는 태위)와 볼기태위(breech presentation: 엉덩이가 자궁 출구 쪽으로 위치), 어깨태위(shoulder presentation), 얼굴태위(brow presentation: 이마가 자궁 출구 쪽으로 위치) 등이 있다. 분만 직전에는 마루점태위가 정상이며, 마루점태위가 되어야 정상적인 질식분만이 수월하다. 비정상적인 태위가 되면, 질식분만대신에 제왕절개수술을 고려해야 한다. |

| 설명 | 재태주수에 관계없이 출생시에서의 신생아 체중. 남녀 모두 약 반수가 3,000~3,500g에 포함된다. 2,500g 이하(빈도 7%)를 미숙아(WHO, 1951년)로 했는데, 1961년 이 조건에 해당하는 아기를 저출생체중아(2,500~1,500g)로 명명하도록 권고하고 있다. 그 밖에 1,500g 미만을 극소미숙아, 1,000g 미만을 초미숙아로 부른다. 4,000g 이상(빈도 3%)를 거대아라고 한다. 재태기간 주수에서의 출생시 평균체중이 2kg 이내인 아기를 영어로 AFD(appropriate for dates)아, 1,5kg 이하를 SED(small for dates)아 또는 LED(light for dates)아, 1,5kg 이상의 것을 LFD(large for dates)아 또는 HFD(heavy for dates)아로 부른다. 현재 LFD, HFD를 사용하도록 WHO가 권고하고 있다. |

| 설명 | 사람의 경우는 보통 임신 제2개월 말(8주) 이후를 태아라고 하며, 그 때까지는 배아라고 하여 구별하고 있다. 태아기에서는 동물의 경우와 외관상 거의 구별이 없고 임신 8주째가 되어야 비로소 뚜렷해진다. 태아기는 임신의 극히 초기이며 자칫하면 모르고 지나치기 쉬운데, 이 무렵에 심장을 비롯하여 중요한 기관이 생기므로, 모체의 바이러스 감염이나 약물복용(탈리도미드계 수면제) 외에 X선조사가 원인이 되어 태아병이 생기는 일이 있다. 태아의 순조로운 발육은 태동의 자각이나 태아 부분의 촉진 외에 태아 심음의 청취나 태아심전도-X선사진에 의하여 확인할 수 있다. 또 난막-태반-탯줄-양수는 태아부속물인데, 특히 태반은 태아에게 있어서 허파-창자-콩팥 등의 구실을 모체 대신 수행하는 중요한 기관이다. 또 태아는 법률상 상속이나 손해배상 청구 등의 이익이 발생한 경우에는 태어난 것으로 간주하여 다루게 됨으로써 보호를 받고 있다. |
