biogenic amine hypothesis the concept that abnormalities in the biogenic amines (especially the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin) are involved in depression. The idea was developed when researchers noticed that monoamine oxidase inhibitors and some tricyclic drugs were able to improve mood by affecting certain brain monoamine functions.
