a genus of small, aerobic, motile, vibrioid, gram-negative bacteria that are obligate parasites on other gram-negative bacteria, replicating between the cell wall and the plasma membrane of the host bacterium; they are found worldwide in soil and fresh and marine waters. The type species is B. bacteriovorus.
