a progressive form of pneumoconiosis caused by inhalation of bauxite fumes containing fine particles of alumina and silica. It begins with alveolitis and progresses to emphysema, often with pneumothorax. Called also bauxite lung, bauxite workers' disease, corundum smelter's lung, and Shaver disease. Cf. aluminosis.
