inflammation and pain of one or more paranasal sinuses (usually the frontal sinus) due to difference in pressure between the surrounding atmosphere and the air within the sinus cavity; it occurs on ascent to or descent from a high altitude, such as in an airplane, when the opening into the sinus is obstructed. Called also aerosinusitis and sinus barotrauma.
