| 설명 | 진정과 수면 작용이 있는 약제중에서 공통적으로 바르비투르산의 구조를 가지는 약제. 대개 작용시간에 따라 지속성, 중간작용성, 단기간성, 초단기간성으로 나눈다. 이중 초단기간성의 약물인 펜토탈(penthotal) 등은 마취제로 쓰이고, 지속성인 페노바르비탈(phenobarbital)은 항경련제로 사용된다. 대부분의 바르비트르염는 중독성이 있어서 사용에 주의를 요한다. |

| 설명 | 독물이 체내에서 작용하여 기능장애를 일으키는 경우를 일컫는 용어. 크게 요독증-자간 등 내인성중독(자가중독)과 유해물질이 신체에 들어와 일어나는 외인성중독으로 구분한다. 급성과 만성 중독으로도 나눌 수 있는데, 만성 중독은 주로 직업에 의해 발생하며, 메탄올-벤젠 등 유기용제와 납-수은-비소-망간-크롬-카드뮴에 의한 중독이 대부분이다. 가장 많이 발생하는 것은 의약품과 농약, 공업용 약품, 가정용 약품 등 약물에 의한 중독이며, 특히 문제가 되는 약물은 마약-각성제-시너-알코올 등이다. 약물은 상용량을 사용하여도 종종 중독을 일으키며, 계속 사용하면 축적하여 중독을 일으키는 경우가 있다. 그 밖에 복독-버섯독 등 동물 및 식물, 산과 알칼리 등 부식성 물질, 일산화탄소-이산화황-프로판 등의 가스 중독과 세균 중독이 있다. 비교적 소량으로도 인체에 해를 입히는 것을 독물 또는 독소라고 한다. 이때 중독을 일으키는 최소량을 중독량이라고 하는데, 이것은 동물의 종류와 개체의 감수성, 질병-임신-쇠약 등 조건에 따라서 큰 차이가 있다. 보통 독물의 양보다는 농도가 문제가 된다. |
