| autologous bone marrow transplant | <haematology, procedure> A process in which a patients healthy bone marrow is withdrawn and preserved. It is later injected back into the patient to replace bone marrow damaged by high doses of radiation therapy. It can then produce healthy blood cells. A person having blood taken a little at a time several months before a surgery to replace the blood they expect to lose during that surgery is a form of autologous transplant.
