| anterolateral | In front and away from the middle line. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| anterolateral central arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum. Synonym: arteriae centrales anterolaterales, arteriae thalamostriatae anterolaterales, anterolateral central arteries, anterolateral striate arteries, anterolateral thalamostriate arteries, arteries of cerebral haemorrhage, lenticulostriate arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |

| anterolateral fontanel | An irregularly shaped interval on either side where the frontal, sphenoidal angle of the parietal, squamous portion of the temporal and greater wing of the sphenoid meet. Synonym: fonticulus sphenoidalis, fonticulus anterolateralis, anterolateral fontanel. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterolateral groove | An indistinct furrow on the ventral surface of the spinal cord and medulla oblongata, on either side marking the line of exit of the anterior nerve roots. Synonym: sulcus lateralis anterior, anterolateral groove. (05 Mar 2000) |

| anterolateral striate arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum. Synonym: arteriae centrales anterolaterales, arteriae thalamostriatae anterolaterales, anterolateral central arteries, anterolateral striate arteries, anterolateral thalamostriate arteries, arteries of cerebral haemorrhage, lenticulostriate arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |

| anterolateral surface of shaft of humerus | The surface of the humerus lateral to the intertubercular groove. Synonym: facies anterior lateralis corporis humeri, facies anterolateralis corporis humeri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterolateral system | A composite bundle of fibres, located in the ventrolateral part of the lateral funiculus, containing spinothalamic, spinohypothalamic, spinoreticular, and spinomesencephalic (spinotectal, spinal to periaqueductal grey, etc.) fibres; occupies the combined areas of the spinal white matter historically divided into anterior and lateral spinothalamic tracts; located in white matter ventral to the denticulate ligament, hence the anatomical basis for the anterolateral cordotomy; concerned with the transmission of nociceptive and thermal information and with crude (nondiscriminative) touch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterolateral thalamostriate arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum. Synonym: arteriae centrales anterolaterales, arteriae thalamostriatae anterolaterales, anterolateral central arteries, anterolateral striate arteries, anterolateral thalamostriate arteries, arteries of cerebral haemorrhage, lenticulostriate arteries. | anterolateral tractotomy | Division of the anterolateral quadrant of the spinal cord to section the spinothalamic tract. Synonym: anterolateral tractotomy, spinal tractotomy, spinothalamic cordotomy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| affinity column | <investigation> A technique of analytical chemistry used to separate and purify a biological molecule from a mixture, based on the attraction of the molecule of interest to a particular ligand which has been previously attached to a solid, inert substance. The mixture is passed through a column containing the ligand attached to the stationary substance, so that the molecule of interest stays within the column while the rest of the mixture continues through to the end. Then, a different chemical is flushed through the column to detach the molecule from the ligand and bring it out separately from the rest of the mixture. (09 Feb 1998) |
| anterior column | The pronounced, ventrally oriented ridge of gray matter in each half of the spinal cord; it corresponds to the anterior or ventral horn appearing in transverse sections of the cord, and contains the motor neurons innervating the skeletal musculature of the trunk, neck, and extremities. See: gray columns. Synonym: columna anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior column of medulla oblongata | An elongated, white prominence on the ventral surface of the medulla oblongata on either side along the anterior median fissure, corresponding to the pyramidal tract. Synonym: pyramis medullae oblongatae, anterior column of medulla oblongata, anterior pyramid. (05 Mar 2000) |
