| 설명 | 큰 창자의 일부분으로 곧창자과 막창자를 연결하는 부위인 오름창자, 가로창자, 내림창자, 구불창자를 지칭하는 말이지만, 큰창자와 동의어로 사용될 경우도 있다. 큰창자는 작은창자에서 소화, 흡수된 것을 받아서 항문까지 보내는 부분이다. 큰창자에서 전해질이나 수용성 비타민 등의 흡수가 일어나기도 하나 작은창자에 비하면 아주 미미한 양이 흡수가 된다. 대신에 많은 양의 수분이 흡수가 되어서 대변의 형성에 기여한다. 그리고 큰창자에는 정상적으로 세균이 있어서 소화, 흡수되고 남은 물질을 분해한다. |

| cancer, colon | A malignant tumour arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. The third leading cause of cancer in males, fourth in females in the U.S. Risk factors for cancer of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer) include heredity, colon polyps, and long standing ulcerative colitis. most colorectal cancers develop from polyps. Removal of colon polyps can prevent colorectal cancer. Colon polyps and early cancer can have no symptoms. Therefore, regular screening is important. Diagnosis can be made by barium enema or by colonoscopy with biopsy confirmation of cancer tissue. Surgery is the most common treatment for colorectal cancer. (12 Dec 1998) |

| colon cancer | <oncology> A malignancy that arises from the lining of either the colon or the rectum. Cancers of the large intestine are the second most common form of cancer found in males and females. Symptoms include rectal bleeding, occult blood in stools, bowel obstruction and weight loss. Treatment is based largely on the extent of cancer penetration into the intestinal wall. Surgical cures are possible if the malignancy is confined to the intestine.
