agger The raised mound or embankment of a Roman road formed by digging out broad ditches on both sides of the road. Thus people travelling on the roads were raised above the surrounding land and so could see any trouble approaching from the sides. Conversely they were also in full view of any wrongdoers. Also used for an assault ramp used in siege warfare.
