A colloidal system in which the dispersed phase is composed of either solid or liquid particles and in which the dispersal medium is some gas, usually air. There is no clear-cut upper limit to the size of the particles comprising the dispersed phase in an aerosol, but as in all other colloidal systems, it is rather commonly set at 1 micron. Haze, most smokes, and some fogs may thus be considered aerosols.

This is a very broad term applied to any suspension of solid or liquid particles in a gas. Particle diameters may range from about 0.001 micrometres to about 100 micrometres. Mass concentrations may range from 10-9 to 10 grams per cubic metre of gas.
