adenylate cyclase [EC 4.6.1.1] an enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the formation of 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) from ATP. The enzyme occurs in plasma cell membranes and is activated by certain hormones (epinephrine, vasopressin, glucagon, and corticotropin). The resultant cyclic AMP serves as an important metabolic regulator. Called also adenyl cyclase and adenylyl cyclase.
