a thiol ester of a carboxylic acid, particularly a long-chain fatty acid, and coenzyme A. Its formation is the first step in fatty acid oxidation, leading to the sequential production of two-carbon groups and progressively shorter acyl coenzyme A compounds until the entire chain is degraded. Also written acyl CoA.
