acute hematogenous osteomyelitis osteomyelitis resulting from localization of blood-borne bacteria in bone, usually seen in the long bones of children following blunt trauma or adjacent infection; the most common infecting organism is Staphylococcus aureus. When it spreads to the joints it is known as septic or bacterial arthritis.
