a sometimes fatal type of bacterial pneumonia seen in immunocompromised patients, caused by infection with the normally ubiquitous Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. It is usually bronchopneumonia, and characteristics include acute onset of dyspnea with fever, productive cough, chest pain, and abscess formation or empyema.

Acinetobacter can be isolated from many sources including drinking and surface water, soil, sewage and different types of foods.
