Xenopus a genus of frogs and toads that have large clawed hindlimbs and weak forelimbs. X. lae´vis is the clawed frog or clawed toad, an African species used in the Xenopus test (see under test).

Xenopus t. (for pregnancy): a female African clawed toad (Xenopus laevis) is injected in the dorsal lymph sac with 2 mL of urine from a woman suspected of being pregnant, or 1 mL of an extract; a deposit of five, six, or more eggs within four to twelve hours indicates pregnancy.
