a malabsorption syndrome caused by Tropheryma whippelii, characterized by diarrhea, steatorrhea, skin pigmentation, arthralgia and arthritis, lymphadenopathy, and central nervous system lesions. The intestinal mucosa is infiltrated with macrophages containing PAS-positive material (the remnants of microorganisms which invade the lamina propria).
